OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN on National Security, Peter Bunting, has accused the police of a cover-up in the shooting incident on Sunday at a hotel in Mandeville.
One man was shot and killed during a heated debate about the presentation of the leader of the Jamaica Labour Party at a massive political rally in the town.
Bunting described as "puzzling" the behaviour of the police in how they have been conducting investigations.
"Quite frankly, it smells of a cover-up," Bunting told journalists yesterday at a press conference at the People's National Party (PNP) headquarters at Old Hope Road, St Andrew.
The man who did the shooting was reportedly interviewed by the police and released.
"By any standard, it must be deemed to be a controversial shooting, yet the police on the spot seem to have taken the decision not to charge the shooter and we find that astonishing," Bunting said.
According to Bunting, his expectation was that the police would have submitted a file to the director of public prosecutions for her to make a ruling on the matter.
Director of communications in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Karl Angell, had promised to respond to Bunting's comments, but up to news time The Gleaner did not receive a response.
